De la Fuente embraces favourite tag

Spain head into the tournament as European champions having defeated England in Euro 2024 final and are one of the favourites to win the World Cup.

Head coach Luis de la Fuente is not shying away from his team being favourites, even though he acknowledges that there are other capable teams.

"We're delighted that's the case," De la Fuente told Reuters. “It helps us approach this World Cup with great enthusiasm.
“The enthusiasm of those who want to achieve something significant, of those who are insatiable in their competitive spirit and who want to keep improving.”

However he warned his team that this is not a guarantee that they will be champions and they must work for it if they want to lift the trophy.

“If we think that being favourites guarantees anything, we're on the wrong track... it guarantees nothing! There are eight or 10 teams where you say, 'They're absolutely top-class teams'. As good as ours? Of course!,” he added.

“Do we feel as strong as them at this point? Of course, we do! But that guarantees nothing.”

According to FIFA, Spain are drawn in Group H alongside South American powerhouse Uruguay, African debutant Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

La Roja boasts one of the most talented squads at the tournament, spearheaded by Barcelona duo Lamine Yamal and Pedri amongst their top players.

De la Fuente has a headache to deal with in goal. Unai Simon has been his number one but Joan Garcia and David Raya impressed with Barcelona and Arsenal.
