David Schwimmer Couldn’t Listen to the ‘Friends’ Theme Song for ‘Quite a While’ After Show Ended

No one told David Schwimmer that life after Friends would be this way. While the rest of the world was still singing along to Friends‘ iconic theme song (“I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts) after the popular comedy wrapped in 2004 after 10 years, Schwimmer admitted he had to put the track on mute for a while.

During an appearance on the Matt Lucas and David Walliams podcast, “Making the Scene,” Schwimmer said he found the tune to be a bit triggering. ”I’ll be really honest, there was a time for quite a while that just hearing the theme song would really… ” he explained before trailing off and letting out a big sigh to sum up his reaction to the track. “I just heard it so many times,” he added.

But as much has he may have wanted a break from the song, the world seemed to make sure he wouldn’t get one. Schwimmer said the song was pretty much inescapable. “Anytime you would go on a show, a talk show, or an interview, that would be your intro song. I just didn’t have the greatest response to it,” he said.

In addition to not being able to listen to “I’ll Be There for You,” Schwimmer also stayed away from watching old Friends episodes. ”I never watched the show after we finished it. For me, it’s like I did it, I’m moving on.”

It wasn’t until Schwimmer’s daughter, Cleo, stumbled upon Friends around “age nine” that the actor was open to revisiting his past work. The actor described making breakfast and hearing his daughter laughing as she watched the hit show, which helped him change his perspective. “My whole relationship to that show changed,” he added.
