Smriti Mandhana scripted her name in the history books as she became the fastest Indian woman to reach 4000 runs in One-Day Internationals. Mandhana achieved this milestone during India’s first ODI against Ireland on January 10 at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. She is now the 15th woman in the world to surpass the 4000-run mark in ODIs and only the second Indian to do so, after Mithali Raj.
Mandhana reached the landmark in the ninth over of India’s chase, taking a single off Arlene Kelly. Leading the Indian team in the absence of regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who was resting, Mandhana played a quick-fire knock of 41 runs from 29 balls. Her innings included a crucial 70-run partnership with debutant Pratika Rawal, giving India a solid start in their chase of 239.
New milestone for Mandhana
This ODI was Mandhana’s 95th match in the format, making her the fastest Indian woman and the third-fastest overall to achieve the 4000-run milestone. She also became the first Indian woman to reach this milestone in fewer than 100 innings. Mithali Raj, with 7805 runs, remains India’s leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs, with Mandhana now second on the list.
Mandhana’s stellar performances have been a key asset for India. She ended 2024 as the highest run-scorer in both ODIs and T20Is and broke the record for the most international runs by a woman cricketer across formats in a calendar year. Additionally, she scored a century in India’s only Test match in 2024 and recorded four ODI centuries during the year, the most by any player in history.
This series against Ireland is India’s final assignment in the ICC Women’s Championship 2025 before the players shift focus to the Women’s Premier League. Mandhana started 2025 on a strong note, continuing her remarkable form from the previous year.
With her ability to deliver in crucial moments and her consistent performances, Smriti Mandhana has cemented her place as one of the finest batters in women’s cricket, carrying forward the legacy of Indian greats like Mithali Raj.
