Serena, Venus Williams set for doubles comeback after 4 years

Serena Williams and Venus Williams are set to make their long-awaited return to doubles tennis after four years after receiving a wildcard entry into the Cincinnati Open later this month.

Tournament organisers confirmed on Monday that the legendary sisters will compete together in the women's doubles draw, marking their first appearance as a pair since the 2022 US Open.

MISSED COMEBACK IN WIMBLEDON

The reunion comes just weeks after their planned comeback at Wimbledon was called off. The Williams sisters had accepted a wildcard into the Championships, but Serena was forced to withdraw because of a knee injury sustained during her first-round singles match against Australia's Maya Joint.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion later revealed that fluid had to be drained from her knee and admitted she was "heartbroken" to miss the opportunity to play alongside her sister again.

"I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn't ready to compete," Serena had said in a post on Instagram after withdrawing from Wimbledon doubles.

Despite the setback, Serena had hinted that her return to professional tennis was not over, signing off her message by telling fans to "stay tuned to a city near you."

The Cincinnati Open now appears set to provide that opportunity.

The Williams sisters are one of the most successful doubles teams in tennis history. Together, they have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, including six Wimbledon crowns, along with three Olympic gold medals.

Their last doubles appearance came at the 2022 US Open, where they were beaten in the opening round by Czech pair Lucie Hradecka and Linda Noskova.

Venus, 46, has also received a wildcard into the singles draw for the Cincinnati Open, which will be held from August 11 to 23. Serena's participation in singles has not been announced, with the 44-year-old currently scheduled to compete only in doubles.
