Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss at least the first three matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as he continues to recover from a back injury that flared up during India's tour of Australia. Bumrah has been out of action since suffering the back strain during the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney.
Bumrah is expected to join the Mumbai Indians camp in the first week of April, subject to clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team, according to ESPNCricinfo. All parties, including the BCCI and Mumbai Indians, are keen to avoid rushing him back into competitive action, instead ensuring he has ample time to fully recover. Bumrah has been training at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in a bid to regain full fitness.
Mumbai Indians begin their IPL 2025 campaign on March 23 with a blockbuster clash against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai, a day after the season opener between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. They then head to Ahmedabad to face former champions Gujarat Titans on March 29, before returning to Mumbai for a home game against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 31.
In the first week of April, Mumbai Indians take on Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on April 4, followed by a home fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 7. After a hectic opening fortnight, Mumbai will get a six-day break before travelling to Delhi for a match on April 13.
Bumrah was initially named in India's Champions Trophy squad, but the BCCI selection committee and team management opted against rushing him back into the setup. India replaced Bumrah with Varun Chakravarthy in their final 15-man squad, which went on to win the coveted title in Dubai. Bumrah has had recurring back issues in the past, and India paid the price for hastily reintegrating him ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2022.
The Indian pacer featured in all five Tests during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, leading from the front. In Rohit Sharma's absence for the series opener, Bumrah captained India to a memorable victory in Perth. He reclaimed the captaincy for the fifth and final Test but was forced to withdraw due to injury during the first innings. His absence proved costly, as India lost the match and with it the chance to level the series.
