Iran catch a break: US relaxes World Cup travel rules before Egypt clash
FIFA World Cup 2026: The United States has allowed Iran to enter Seattle two days before its World Cup match against Egypt. The change gives Team Melli more preparation time, though post-match exit rules remain in place.

- The US have allowed Iran to enter Seattle two days before Friday's match
- Team Melli had travelled from Tijuana only a day before games
- Iran must still leave America immediately after the Egypt fixture ends
Iran's FIFA World Cup campaign received a small but significant boost on Tuesday after the United States eased travel restrictions imposed on the team during the tournament. The move will allow Team Melli to arrive at their next match venue a day earlier than before, offering some relief after weeks of complaints over their travel arrangements.
The decision comes just days before Iran's decisive Group G encounter against Egypt in Seattle, a match that could determine whether they reach the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their history.
Until now, Iran had been permitted to enter the United States only one day before each match. The squad has been operating from a base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, and has been required to travel across the border shortly before games, returning immediately after the final whistle.
The arrangement drew criticism from Iranian officials and coaching staff, with head coach Amir Ghalenoei recently describing Iran as "the most oppressed team in the whole World Cup."
On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed a slight relaxation of those rules.
"For the Iranian team's third match in Seattle on June 26, the team has been permitted to come into the U.S. two days before the match," a DHS spokesperson said.
The change means Iran will be able to travel to Seattle on Wednesday ahead of Friday's clash against Egypt rather than making the journey just 24 hours before kickoff.
WHAT CHANGES FOR IRAN?
While the updated policy offers greater preparation time, several restrictions remain in place.
The Iranian squad will still be required to leave the United States immediately after their match concludes and return to their tournament base in Tijuana. According to the Department of Homeland Security, broader security protocols remain unchanged.
"The Iran team will still be required to leave the day the match ends. The overall security measures and protocol are the same. We remain committed to providing the safest tournament possible for players, staff and fans alike," the DHS spokesperson added.
The restrictions have been in place amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran following months of geopolitical conflict between the two nations.
In March, U.S. President Donald Trump had stated that Iran were welcome to participate in the tournament but suggested it would not be appropriate for the team to remain in the United States between matches due to security concerns.
Iran had previously indicated that it intended to lodge a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the travel requirements.
CAN IRAN REACH THE KNOCKOUT STAGE?
Despite the off-field challenges, Iran have quietly put together an impressive campaign.
Team Melli have drawn both of their Group G matches so far, including a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Belgium and an entertaining 2-2 result against New Zealand. Those performances have left them on two points heading into the final round of group fixtures.
The equation is relatively straightforward.
A victory over Egypt would almost certainly secure Iran a place in the knockout rounds and potentially deliver the nation's first-ever progression beyond the World Cup group stage. Depending on results elsewhere, even a draw could leave the door open.
