Mumbai Indians have announced that they will wait until matchday to decide on Rohit Sharma's participation in the match against Punjab Kings. Rohit sustained an injury while batting during Mumbai Indians' run chase against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, which forced him to leave the field in the sixth over.

Before the over commenced, Rohit required treatment from the team physio, resulting in a considerable delay. Although he resumed to face the next delivery, he only managed a defensive shot before retiring hurt. According to a report from Cricbuzz, Rohit was to undergo scans to determine the extent of his injury. Prior to the game, MI provided updates, including the news that Will Jacks would soon be joining the team.

Regarding Rohit's availability, the franchise stated that the medical team and coaching staff are currently evaluating him.

"Will Jacks is on his way and should be here soon. As for Rohit, the medical team and coaching staff are assessing him. We’ll get to know more as and when there is an update," said a representative from MI.

IF ROHIT IS ABSENT, WHO WILL OPEN?

If Rohit is unavailable, MI might consider pairing Quinton de Kock with Ryan Rickleton, though this would occupy a foreign player slot. Naman Dhir, who attended the pre-match press conference, is another option and expressed readiness to accept the role if offered.

"No sir, nothing like that has been discussed yet. The management knows everything, so we’ll probably find out tomorrow about the batting order," Dhir stated. "I’m ready to bat anywhere. I’ve done it last year as well — at No. 5 and No. 7. So I’m prepared for any role, even if it’s opening," he added.

Dhir is yet to open for MI in his IPL career. Another possible option for Mumbai is Suryakumar Yadav opening alongside Rickleton. Suryakumar has opened in 12 IPL matches for MI, scoring 441 runs. MI are currently in ninth spot on the points table and will be looking to break their losing streak in the tournament.

Rohit has scored 137 runs in four games so far in IPL 2026.
