2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini faced an early exit from Wimbledon 2025 after losing in three sets to World No.62 Kamilla Rakhimova. The fourth-seeded Paolini looked in control after winning the first set, but Rakhimova made a stupendous comeback to win the match 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 in two hours and 19 minutes.
Trailing 4-5, 0-40, Paolini showed nerves of steel to save three match points, but couldn’t save the fourth as Rakhimova advanced to her maiden Round 3 in the grass court major. Paolini’s exit means that Aryna Sabalenka is the only player remaining amongst the top five seeds in the women’s draw.
Carlos Alcaraz put in a dominating show in his second-round match against Oliver Tarvet, winning the match 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court. The five-time Grand Slam champion will next face the winner of the match between Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.
In the last match of the day on Centre Court, 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu put in a strong showing to knock Marketa Vondrousova out of women’s singles. It took Raducanu an hour and 22 minutes to beat the 2023 Wimbledon champion 6-3, 6-3.
Raducanu has a huge task in hand as she next faces World No.1 Sabalenka, who defeated Marie Bouzkova in straight sets in the second round. Raducanu lost in her only meeting with Sabalenka at the Indian Wells last year.
“I guess there’s no pressure at all on me in the next round,” Raducanu said of her upcoming match with Sabalenka.
In other matches, Katerina Siniakova, who eliminated Qinwen Zheng in the first round, lost to four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, who won the match 6-3, 6-2.
30th seed Linda Noskova defeated Germay’s Eva Lys, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Noskova will next face Rakhimova, who will be brimming with confidence after beating Paolini.
