Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho has broken his silence on rumours linking him with a sensational return to Real Madrid, admitting that there is contact between him and the club. However, in a classic Mourinho fashion, he has insisted that no formal offer has been made to him so far.

Speaking on Sunday, May 17, Mourinho confirmed that discussions around his future are expected to intensify this week as uncertainty continues to surround Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa.

“My future should be decided this week,” Mourinho told reporters.

“I have a proposal from Benfica. I don't have a proposal from Real Madrid. At the same time, I was saying that to hide that there is nothing, we cannot do that, there is something, but not with me directly.

“I need time, I need space, I need time to make my decision and this week I think is going to be very important.”

Mourinho, 63, has emerged as one of the leading candidates to take over at Real Madrid after guiding Benfica through an unbeaten Primeira Liga season. The veteran coach is currently contracted with Benfica until June 2027, although the Portuguese club are reportedly pushing to extend his deal further.

WHY REAL MADRID NEED A NEW MANAGER?

The links to Madrid have gained momentum amid growing turmoil at the Spanish giants this season. Real Madrid are currently battling an internal crisis after a disappointing campaign that has seen them fall behind in the La Liga title race and struggle in Europe.

Reports in Spain have also suggested that tensions inside the dressing room have escalated in recent months, with multiple confrontations allegedly taking place between senior players. Questions have also been raised about the tactical direction of the team under Arbeloa, who took charge ahead of the current season.

Madrid’s inconsistent performances, coupled with dressing-room unrest and pressure from supporters, have fuelled speculation that the club could look for an experienced figure capable of restoring authority inside the squad. Mourinho’s name has naturally resurfaced because of his history with the club and his reputation for handling high-pressure environments.

MOURINHO'S LAST STINT AT REAL MADRID

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning a La Liga title and the Copa del Rey during one of the most intense eras in Spanish football. His Madrid side famously accumulated 100 points during the 2011-12 league season and broke Barcelona’s dominance under Pep Guardiola.

Despite his often fiery relationship with the Spanish media during his first spell, Mourinho remains a hugely respected figure among sections of the Real Madrid fanbase.

Arbeloa himself spoke glowingly about Mourinho ahead of Madrid’s clash against Sevilla and admitted that he would welcome the Portuguese manager back to the Santiago Bernabeu.

“For me, as one of his players, but above all as a Real Madrid fan, I feel he's number one and I think he is number one,” Arbeloa said.

“And I think I felt that way a month ago and I'll continue to feel that Jose has been, is and always will be one of us, and if he's the one here next season, I'll be very happy to see him back home.”

Widely regarded as one of the most successful managers of the modern era, Mourinho has previously coached clubs such as Chelsea, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

He is also one of the few managers in football history to have won the UEFA Champions League with two different clubs, lifting the trophy with Porto and Inter Milan.
