Bangladesh suffered a horrendous batting collapse as Sri Lanka took a 1-0 lead in the ODI series with a commanding 77-run win on Wednesday, July 2, at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Tigers lost seven wickets for just five runs, slumping from 100 for one to 105 for eight in the space of just 27 balls.
After opting to bat first, Charith Asalanka’s fifth ODI hundred helped Sri Lanka post 244 in 49.2 overs. The hosts got off to a rough start, with Pathum Nissanka, Nishan Madushka, and Kamindu Mendis all falling for single-digit scores. Asalanka and Kusal Mendis revived the innings with a 60-run stand before Tanvir Islam dismissed Mendis for 45.
Asalanka reached his fifty off 61 balls and went on to complete his century in 117 deliveries. The left-hander scored 106 off 123 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes. However, Sri Lanka were bowled out with four balls remaining in their innings.
Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, 1st ODI Highlights
Janith Liyanage (29), Milan Rathnayake (22), and Wanindu Hasaranga (22) provided valuable support to Asalanka. For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed was the standout bowler with figures of 10-2-47-4. Tanzim Hasan Sakib picked up three wickets, while newly-appointed skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz went wicketless.
Bangladesh surrender tamely
Parvez Hossain Emon looked promising during his 13-run knock before being dismissed by Asitha Fernando. Following his departure, Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Najmul Hossain Shanto steadied the innings with a 71-run partnership for the second wicket. However, once Shanto was run out for 23 while attempting a second run, the Bangladesh innings unraveled.
The spin duo of Kamindu Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga unleashed chaos, with the Bangladeshi batters appearing completely at sea. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Litton Das both fell for ducks, while Towhid Hridoy managed just one run. Despite Tanzid laying a solid foundation with a 62-run knock off 61 balls, his efforts ultimately went in vain.
Jaker Ali Anik tried to resist the collapse and notched a fighting half-century off 58 balls. However, his efforts only delayed the inevitable, as Bangladesh were bowled out for 167 in 35.5 overs. Hasaranga ended the innings by trapping Jaker lbw to seal the win.
Hasaranga was the standout with the ball, returning remarkable figures of 7.5-2-10-4. Kamindu Mendis was equally effective, taking 3 wickets for just 19 runs in his 5 overs.
Bangladesh will look to bounce back when the second ODI takes place on Saturday, July 5.
