IND vs ENG: Mohammed Shami, Jaiswal in focus as India aim 'clean-win' in Mumbai

In Short

  • India and England play their final T20I in Mumbai
  • India are expected to make changes to their line-up
  • India won under controversial circumstances on Friday

India and England will meet for the final time in the T20I series on Sunday, February 2. Billed as an exciting hitting contest, the series has come to a tame end with both teams not firing in unison over the last four matches.

When the series was being planned, both boards would have hoped for a high-profile, high-scoring contest in a winner-takes-all kind of match in the 5th and final T20I at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After all, while this is Suryakumar Yadav's homeground, this is also the venue that Jos Buttler enjoys a lot in the Indian Premier League.

However, there is no chance for that drama anymore as the England batting line-up imploded in the final 5 overs of the 4th T20I in Pune, handing India an unassailable lead of 3-1 in the series.

Now that both teams are playing a dead rubber before the ODIs, a lot of changes can be expected, at least for the hosts on Sunday.

But, is all lost? Is there no drama, something to look forward to in the final T20I?

Of course, there is.

India's series win in Pune was slightly flattened due to a concussion substitute controversy. After Shivam Dube got hit on the helmet in the first innings and could not take the field, India opted to replace him with Harshit Rana.

England players and supporters were left fuming and questioned if this kind of substitution, a pacer for an all-rounder, was even possible.

Rana ran through the England line-up in that game and helped India clinch a clinical victory in Pune. On Sunday, he will be put to the test once again, hopefully this time as a starter in the Indian line-up.

Sunday's match will be a battle of egos between the two sides as they try to assert their dominance, at least in moral terms. If India wins, they get the bragging rights - that concussion sub or not, they are technically a superior side to the 2022 champions.

On the other side, England will try to win this game by hook or by crook to prove a point.

Team News: India vs England, 5th T20I

India's bowling coach Morne Morkel has more or less confirmed that Mohammed Shami will be playing in the final T20I match. India can opt to rest Arshdeep Singh as well, given it is a dead rubber.

"Shami has been bowling really well. You know, catching him at warm-ups, (the ball) is really hitting the glove hard. So, (we're) very happy with how he's coming along. You know, he's probably going to get an opportunity in the next game. We'll see how things go. But, yeah, (we're) excited to have him back in the group," Morkel said ahead of the match.

India can also opt to rest Abhishek Sharma, who has looked in good touch in his innings for the majority of the series. Yashasvi Jaiswal could come out to bat in his place, alongside Sanju Samson, who would be desperate to return to form.

Mumbai Pitch and Conditions

Historically, the Mumbai pitch is a cracker of a deck. There is initial movement under the lights, but if one can see off the new ball, the pitch does not take much time to turn into a prime batting deck.

Predicted Playing XIs

England have a point to prove and are unlikely to tinker with their line-up. Saqib Mahmood most definitely plays in Mumbai, and in case Mark Wood is fit, he may replace Jofra Archer, who has been a touch expensive in this series.

India, on the other hand, might make a couple of changes to experiment with their depth.

India Predicted Playing XI:

Sanju Samson (WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube/Ramandeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Axar Patel, Varun Chakaravarthy, Mohammed Shami, Harshit Rana

England Predicted Playing XI:

Phil Salt (WK), Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler (C), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson/Mark Wood/Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood
