Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan has confirmed that captain Shubman Gill will return for their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.
Gill missed the previous game due to muscle spasms, bringing an end to a four-year run of 1,468 days without missing an IPL match for the franchise. Rashid Khan led the side in his absence, but the Titans went down by six runs to Rajasthan Royals in a close contest.
Gill had worn bandages on his shoulder and neck in that game and has been dealing with neck spasms since the 2025–26 home Test season. Sudharsan said the skipper has now recovered and is set to return to the top of the order in place of Kumar Kushagra.
"He is absolutely fine and will play," said Sudharsan on the eve of the game, confirming Shubman Gill's return for the clash.
Gujarat Titans have been labelled a top-heavy batting side, with their middle order failing to capitalise on the strong platform provided by Sudharsan in the previous match.
Despite that, the left-hander stressed that the team continues to back its middle-order unit, which includes Washington Sundar and Glenn Phillips. "If someone from the top three batters plays longer, it's always a great thing for the team. We believe in our middle order. This is the team which played last year and we qualified. So it's just two games and I and the whole team believes that our middle order will win games," he said.
Reflecting on the evolving demands of T20 cricket, Sudharsan said batters must continuously adapt. "Definitely as the sport is evolving and the T20 batting is getting greater every season or even every five, six months. It's very important for me to learn from it and be versatile enough to have that in my kitty and equip myself with that."
On his preparation for IPL 2026, he added: "Nothing in particular but the biggest awareness I had was if we are going to chase something really big, how are we going to approach the innings. So just awareness point and mindset point and what decisions we can take. I was working on that before the tournament.
"And having your mind sorted is the biggest thing. I put a lot of time on that. I do yoga and I do a lot of meditation, visualization to keep myself mentally fit," Sudharsan said.
Gujarat could also consider Jason Holder as an option to strengthen the middle order. The pitch in Delhi is expected to favour a high-scoring contest, although intermittent rain and a forecast of thunderstorms around 4 pm may leave some moisture on the surface, potentially aiding seamers early on before conditions settle.
Delhi Capitals are currently fourth on the points table, while Gujarat Titans sit ninth and will be eager to climb the standings and arrest their losing run.
Ravi Bishnoi's spell proved decisive in the last match, highlighting the inconsistency Gujarat have faced so far this season.
Wednesday's clash shapes up as a tight contest, with Gujarat aiming to regain momentum and Delhi looking to consolidate their place in the top four. With conditions set for a competitive game, both sides will look to maximise their strengths and secure crucial points.
