IPL 2026 Play Of The Day: Resolute Hyderabad bowlers defy odds to choke Chennai
SRH vs CSK, IPL 2026: If someone had told you that a team would defend a sub-200 total in Hyderabad, you would have probably laughed it off and credited them with a fine sense of humour. After all, this is a venue where bowlers often come just to survive the carnage, not control it.

- SRH defended 194 against CSK on Saturday
- Eshan Malinga took 3 wickets for the Sunrisers
- CSK still haven’t chased a 180 plus target since 2018
Yes, Chennai Super Kings don’t exactly have a glowing recent reputation in big chases since they haven’t chased anything above 180 since 2018.
But then again, this is Hyderabad, a ground that features twice among the top four highest team scores in IPL history. A place where Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen have repeatedly turned bowling attacks into cautionary tales. So, when CSK walked out on Saturday, logic still slightly favoured them despite their poor chasing record.

And yet, on this night, the script tore itself apart.
Sunrisers Hyderabad pulled off the improbable to seal a 10-run win over CSK. The same bowling unit that had leaked runs in the IPL opener against RCB, the same side that had once conceded a 202 chase in less than 16 overs suddenly found discipline, control, and bite when it mattered most.
Even when SRH posted 194 earlier, it felt slightly under par in this batting paradise. But cricket rarely respects expectations. The home side tightened the screws, strangled CSK’s chase over the crucial moments, and turned a comfortable finish narrative into a slow, gripping collapse.
THE STRONG FIGHTBACK
When the Super Kings raced to 66 for one in just 4.3 overs, with Ayush Mhatre striking it as if the ball were a football, the night seemed to be slipping rapidly away from Sunrisers. And why wouldn’t it? A required rate of 8.32, nine wickets in hand, and a Hyderabad surface where 10-plus an over is almost routine, CSK looked set to cruise.
But T20 games have a way of flipping narratives when you least expect it.
From that position of control, CSK managed just 118 runs in the remaining 15.3 overs, crawling at 7.61 as the chase unraveled in slow motion. While Chennai lost their way, it was SRH who forced the script to change.
Nitish Kumar Reddy struck early to break the momentum, before Eshan Malinga ripped through the middle overs, turning pressure into panic. Shivang Kumar, in his debut IPL season, delivered a telling blow by removing the dangerous Dewald Brevis.
And then came the squeeze.
Sakib Hussain was relentless, offering nothing to hit and suffocating the chase. Shivam Dube, Matthew Short and Jamie Overton were all kept in check as boundaries dried up at the worst possible time. Sakib conceded just one boundary in his entire spell, including two overs, the 15th and 17th, without a single one, even as the asking rate crept towards 10 and CSK still believed.
Even Praful Hinge, who had an expensive night overall after leaking 60 runs, found redemption when it mattered most, defending 18 in the final over and conceding just seven to seal a remarkable turnaround.
This Sunrisers attack may lack experience, but on this night, they bowled with heart, discipline and belief, offering a glimpse of a unit that refuses to go quietly, even when the odds say otherwise.
THE PLAN
The Sunrisers knew the powerplay would set the platform for them and they chose discipline over drama. The brief was simple: hit the top of off, no unnecessary experiments, no straying from the plan.
Because in moments like these, flair can be a trap. One overthought variation, one deviation in line or length, and the game can slip away. SRH stayed true to their method, resisting the urge to get fancy and in doing so, kept taking wickets, although the Super Kings kept scoring at an alarming rate.
“It was just a message from outside — stick to a top-of-off length and don’t try to do too much. That’s what we did, and you can see we picked up a couple of wickets in the powerplay,” Nitish Reddy said after the match.
The Sunrisers may not boast a star-studded bowling attack, with Pat Cummins yet to feature this season, but cricket has rarely been about names or price tags. What it demands, above all, is impact—and SRH delivered that in abundance on Saturday.
A bowling unit might not look intimidating on paper, but it doesn’t have to. All it needs is execution, and SRH showed that performance outweighs reputation every single time.
The win over the Super Kings will do wonders for their confidence. It has lifted them into the top four, but the real test begins now—holding on to that spot as the competition intensifies.
