Inigo Calderon maintains cautious stance on Bristol Rovers' transfer activity ahead of deadline
by Daniel Hargraves · BristolLiveInigo Calderon has admitted he wants to see the other side of the transfer window ahead of deadline day on Monday, warning that while it’s still open “something bad can happen.”
The Bristol Rovers head coach has maintained a reserved stance on the winter market since it opened with the Gas so far bringing in midfielders Romaine Sawyers and Matt Butcher. They have also sent Bryant Bilongo and Luke McCormick out on loan to Harrogate Town and Forest Green Rovers respectively while loanees Jake Garrett and Michael Forbes returned to their parent clubs.
It is expected that Rovers will bring in at least one more player before the 11pm deadline on Monday night with Aston Villa centre-back Sil Swinkels seemingly close to joining on loan. Meanwhile, it is understood that the club remain in the market for a striker.
However, Calderon was more concerned about the possibility of losing players, stating after the Gas’ 3-1 win over Peterborough United: “Well, listen. I just want to finish this market because you don't want something to happen badly. And I think the last day something bad can happen, you know, but happen means that we just lose a player that we want to stay. That means we lose a player we want to stay.
“I understand this part of the business but I would prefer to focus on what we have and to know the squad we have.
“As I say from the very first day, if we can bring someone that can make us better, they will be more than welcome but I’m not lost on that.
“It's not an easy one because obviously then you're going to get someone that hasn't been playing or something always happening. It’s not going to be the best player or a really expensive player and we cannot afford that or he’s not going to leave his club to come to us.

“It’s a really difficult one so you have to make sure that, as I say, what you bring in is better than what you have and it’s not just to bring them because I think it’s a big show around the market,” the Spaniard added. “The countdown on the TV and everybody in the training grounds to see who is coming and if he's coming in a private jet, even better, and if you spend 100 million, it's like you are doing better business. For me, it's bad business.
“So I understand it’s part of the show but, for me, we can’t get crazy. But it’s simple again, if he’s better than what we have, welcome. If not, we stay like that.”
