Inigo Calderon reacts to Bristol Rovers' Huddersfield win and offers Promise Omochere update

Inigo Calderon has hailed the "passion" of his Bristol Rovers players after their bid to survive League One relegation was boosted with a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town at the Mem on Saturday. However, it does also seem as though they have lost striker Promise Omochere in the process.

The 24-year-old made his return from a two-month layoff with a serious hamstring problem last weekend and was handed his first start since returning to action on Saturday. However, the Irishman pulled up after just five minutes and had to subsequently come off.

Just minutes later though and Rovers took the lead as Ruel Sotiriou latched onto a header from Clinton Mola after a poor Huddersfield clearance and fired home his fourth goal in six matches at the Mem.

The Gas had to defend stoically at times throughout the remaining 80-odd minutes while also having good chances fall to Sotiriou again as well as Matt Butcher in the second half.

Following Burton Albion's 2-1 defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers, who Rovers host on Tuesday night, Calderon's side opened up a six-point gap above the relegation zone.

"Well, the passion, I think," the Gas head coach declared post-match when asked what the key was to his team's result and performance. "We've been talking about the last couple of games and where I think we started the last game away at Shrewsbury and today I think we saw that. I think we won that because we wanted [it] more than them.

"Maybe the football was not the best. I would say that we were up during the game and we improved during the game but I think the most important thing was the desire to win, you know? And that's really, really important in this situation. I think that's the main thing and after everything is coming easier after that."

Rovers did have to make an early adjustment following Omochere's forced withdrawal with Sotiriou taking his place up top alongside Scott Sinclair, in for Chris Martin who sustained a knock to his knee on Friday. Meanwhile, defender Taylor Moore came in at central midfield alongside Matt Butcher.

"Well, it didn't look too good when we have to make a sub because we knew that we couldn't play the whole game to Promise but obviously having to change him so early, that's not what you want," Calderon added.

"Losing Chris Martin yesterday and today the other striker, sometimes in this moment we could say, 'well, we are unlucky' but I think the players reacted in a good way. You have two options. You can give up or you can say, 'I face you' and I think we did that.

"I think everyone did extra. They had to do extra because we didn't have the two strikers that we thought could play so credit to the boys today."

Martin's absence isn't expected to be a long one, although the striker is also expected to miss Tuesday night's game at home to Bolton.

However, considering the severity of his injuries previously this season, it is now looking doubtful that Omochere will feature for the Gas again this season which is a major blow for both the club and the summer arrival.

Calderon confirmed that it is once again a hamstring injury with the striker having to leave the Mem on crutches, confessing: "Well, it doesn't look good and I feel so, so sad for him because he is a great kid. He's been trying so much, so hard to get back with the team and he was devastated.

"It's really bad because injuries is the worst thing you can have and especially a player that is such a nice kid who wanted to help us and isn't able to do it, it's really sad.

"But listen, as I say, as a group, the only thing we can do to help is showing what we did today and we have to keep doing that."
