Chris Eubank Sr makes dramatic U-turn and arrives at son's Conor Benn fight
by Steve Wollaston, Martin Domin · NottinghamshireLiveChris Eubank Sr has confirmed he will be present ringside to watch his son, Chris Eubank Jr, fight Conor Benn tonight.
Despite previously condemning his son as "disgusting" for agreeing to the bout, the former world champion made a surprising turnaround, arriving at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where he was greeted with loud cheers from fans, captured on the big screen during one of the undercard fights.
Eubank Sr, 58, has publicly opposed this evening's match-up, which sees his middleweight son take on welterweight Conor Benn. Controversy was stoked when Eubank Jr weighed in just over the limit at 160.05lb yesterday, resulting in a hefty fine of £375,000.
This enforced penalty seemed to endorse Senior’s concerns over the danger of the clash, particularly given that Junior was restricted from gaining more than 10lb overnight prior to this morning's second weigh-in. Eubank Jr narrowly came in under the 170lb cap, sparing himself additional charges.
The sight of both Eubanks heading to the changing room in good spirits marks a stark contrast to the tense nature of their relationship leading up to today's eagerly anticipated showdown. Tensions were further inflamed previously, not only by weight issues but also when Eubank Jr hurled an egg at Benn during a press event in February, reports the Mirror.
"Who taught you that? Did Karron [Eubank Jr's mum] teach you that? Who taught you that? That is disgraceful. That is disgraceful. I'm going to be in your corner? I would never have been in your corner; that is a disgrace," he said.
While discussing Benn moving up in weight, he added: "It's against the rules what is happening, 147lbs fighting 160lbs is against the rules. When Kell Brook was made to fight GGG [Gennady Golovkin] it's against the rules. That boy [Brook] had his eye socket smashed. For promoters, it is just a game, but to the warriors, it is a way of life."
We have to call them what they are, they are trash, they are trashing us. We are not trash, we are the standard bearers... If you are not clever and you are not noble, this [boxing] will kill you, this vocation, what they call sport.
If you don't play it right already, Conor, you don't have a career to enjoy. ".
Eubank Sr beat Benn's dad Nigel in 1990 before the rivals fought to a controversial draw three years later. Their sons have taken on the baton and will aim to settle the rivalry in north London tonight.
