Elliot Anderson shows true colours as Newcastle beat Liverpool in Carabao Cup final

Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson was spotted celebrating boyhood club Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool with Toon Army fans at Wembley.

Anderson left Newcastle to join the Reds last summer and has been a key figure for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as they challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League and qualification for next season’s Champions League.

But he still clearly loves Newcastle, having come through the club’s youth ranks before breaking into the first team.

And a day after helping Forest beat Ipswich Town 4-2 in the Premier League, he was spotted by TV cameras celebrating in the Newcastle end at Wembley, after Eddie Howe’s side beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final to end their long wait for a major trophy.

Anderson is seen punching the air in delight before the TV camera pans to Eddie Howe and Nick Pope doing the same close to the corner flag.

Speaking after the final whistle, Howe said: “A great moment and that’s what it’s all about. It’s about embracing the success.

“You have so many difficult days in football – and this club has had its fair share over the years – so just try to enjoy the moment and take it all in.”

“It’s really important. Hopefully one can become more – there’s no guarantee, though – but I just think it proves we can do it,” he added.

“I’ve never had any doubts about our ability to lift our game but you don’t get many shots at this, you don’t get many shots at a cup final, and today we had to try to take our opportunity. That’s where the players delivered under pressure so well and so impressively.

“It also proved that we can mix our game against the very, very best. Now the challenge for us is to try to get there more often, as in lifting our game like we did today.”
