Iran accuses US of ‘biased interference’ over World Cup staff visa denials

Iran has accused the US of denying visas to “integral” backroom staff-including the head of Iran’s football federation, his deputy, and a large portion of managerial and technical advisors- hours after Washington confirmed Iranian players had been authorized to travel to the upcoming World Cup.

Iran’s embassy in Turkey called the US actions “politically biased interference” and a “whitewash.” US officials confirmed that visas were issued to the players and necessary support staff.

According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) would not be allowed entry, citing a refusal to let Iran “sneak terrorists" into the country under false pretenses.

Crucially, several Iranian players completed their mandatory military service with the IRGC, creating potential visa complications under the US policy. Iranian embassy officials have called on FIFA football’s world governing body to step in. 

For the first time in World Cup history, a host nation is receiving the team of a country that is actively engaged in severe geopolitical tensions. 

This year's World Cup will be co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico beginning on June 11. Additionally, Iran are also due to play Belgium in California and Egypt in Seattle in their two group games.
