One thing Pakistan can take confidence from before heading into this crucial match is their last meeting with India in this prestigious tournament. They have some happy memories to cherish. So, what happened the last time India faced Pakistan in the Champions Trophy? Let’s take a look.
IND vs PAK Champions Trophy 2017 final
Almost eight years ago, India and Pakistan faced off in the ICC Champions Trophy final, a match many Indian cricket fans would rather forget. Despite a strong campaign in the 2017 edition, where India had already defeated Pakistan in the group stage, the final proved to be a completely different story, with an unpredictable Pakistan emerging victorious.
Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bowl first, putting Pakistan in to bat. It was Fakhar Zaman who completely dominated the Indian bowlers. He had a stroke of luck early on when he nicked a delivery to wicketkeeper MS Dhoni while on 3, but Jasprit Bumrah had overstepped, resulting in a no-ball. Capitalising on this lifeline, Zaman went on to score a well-deserved century, making 114 runs.
He was well supported by Mohammad Hafeez, who used his experience to play a crucial knock of 57 runs, helping Pakistan post a massive total of 338 runs.
In response, India struggled right from the start, losing three wickets for under 40 runs. Mohammad Amir was the star of the bowling attack, dismissing key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. While Hardik Pandya showed some resistance with a quickfire 76, his run-out in the 27th over sealed India’s fate. As a result, Pakistan secured a dominant 180-run victory, clinching their maiden Champions Trophy title under Sarfaraz Ahmed.
