Rohit Sharma doesn’t know “how to react” after seeing stand named after him in Wankhede Stadium
by Ansh Athani · Inside Sport IndiaThe Mumbai Cricket Association announced they'll honour Rohit Sharma, and a stand in his name was unveiled on April 16.
Rohit Sharma has been playing at the Wankhede Stadium for over 2 decades. It’s a venue that’s the most close to its heart. Naturally, it’s special for him to play at his home. But his last two matches for the Mumbai Indians (MI) have been something else.
Rohit Sharma Stand in Wankhede Stadium
Rohit hasn’t been in great form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Before the last two matches, he’d scored just 56 runs in 5 matches. But then something changed. On April 16, the Rohit Sharma Stand was unveiled. From watching matches there as a young boy to having his name inside the ground.
Still coming to terms
On April 17, he scored 26 (16) against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and on April 20 against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rohit remained unbeaten, scoring 76 (45). The Mumbai Cricket Association honouring him clearly had a positive impact on the former MI captain.
After his match-winning knock against CSK, which earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award, Rohit opened up about having a stand named after him. It’s been a couple of days, but the opener is still overwhelmed by the fact that his name is printed on the stand.
“Looks far away, that stand. I enjoyed being out there; for me, it’s about staying out there and finishing the game. That’s what gives me the most satisfaction. We are peaking at the right time; we have won three games in a row. It’s a huge honour. As a young kid, we weren’t allowed to come to the stadium at some stage. But, having played all my cricket here, and now to have that stand, it’s a big honour. Whenever that name comes up, I don’t know how to react,” Rohit said in the post-match interview.
