by · Inside Sport India

Team India had created history by winning the Women's World Cup for the very first time, on November 2, by beating South Africa.

As planned, the Indian team met PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday at his residence in New Delhi, after winning the historic Women’s World Cup 2025, a few days back. Not only the PM felicitated the players but also was all praise for the team, who bounced back after losing three back-to-back matches.

As per ANI, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur recalled her previous meeting with the PM back in 2017, when the team had returned without the trophy, after losing a close final to England. On the other hand, VC Smriti Mandhana credited the PM for being an inspiration to the team.

Meanwhile the PM recalled Harleen Deol’s brilliant catch at the boundary, way back in 2021, which he had highlighted on social media. As far as skipper Harmanpreet is concerned, she asked the PM about his ability to stay in the present. The PM too, curiously, asked her about keeping the match-winning ball with her.

The PM also spoke to the girls about the Fit India movement, and also encouraged them to promote it. He asked the players to visit schools to inspire young students. Coming to the November 2 final between India and South Africa, hosts were put in to bat by visiting skipper Laura Wolvaardt.

Shafali Verma came with an innings of a lifetime and scored a quickfire 87 to take India to 298. Deepti Sharma also contributed with a valuable 58. Eventually, largely due to all round efforts of these two very players, India beat South Africa by a massive 52 runs to win their maiden World Cup.
