Women’s cricket = Men’s cricket after World Cup 2025 final
As per a press release, the India vs South Africa clash in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 attracted 185 million viewers, the same as the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 final between IND and SA did. At 446 million, the tournament’s reach exceeds the combined total of the last three ICC Women’s World Cups on digital. 21 million viewers were reportedly watching on as India women’s cricket team lifted their maiden ODI World Cup trophy on November 2.
“The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup India 2025 has reaffirmed the growing stature of women’s cricket in India. The exceptional quality of cricket on display, especially the Indian team’s incredible performance, has driven record-breaking viewership and attracted a larger, more passionate fan base than ever before. This marks an important shift for women’s cricket, it is no longer just being watched; it is being celebrated by millions,” Ishan Chatterjee, the CEO of Sports- JioHotstar said.
After winning the first two games, India were put on the backfoot with three back-to-back defeats at the hands of AUS, SA and ENG in the World Cup 2025. They then bounced back with a win against New Zealand before their tie against Bangladesh was washed out.
India knocked out the formidable Australia in the semi-finals by 5 wickets following which they defeated SA in the final to create history.
