Steven Gerrard has left Al-Ettifaq after 18 months, following a tough season. Know his total earnings during the stay in Saudi.

England and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has stepped down as coach of Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent, as announced by the Saudi Arabian club on Thursday. Club president Samer Al Mishal said, “Gerrard has honoured the club, and for that, he will never be forgotten. This decision is in the best interest of both Steven and the club as we move forward.”

A challenging season at Al-Ettifaq

Gerrard joined the Middle Eastern club following a tough stint in the English Premier League with Aston Villa, where he was sacked after winning only two of the first 12 games in the 2022–23 season. Before that, he successfully led Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years. However, his time with Al-Ettifaq, which began in July 2023 on a two-year deal later extended by two more years, was not very successful. Currently, Al-Ettifaq stands 12th in the Saudi Pro League with two wins and eight losses in 14 games.

How much money did Gerrard earn in Saudi?

According to reports, Steven Gerrard’s annual salary of £15 million has allowed him to amass around £21.9 million since he took over as coach at Al-Ettifaq. In Indian currency, this amounts to about ₹235.86 crore. Breaking it down further, he earned an impressive ₹3.99 crore per match or approximately ₹44.41 lakh for each minute played in regular time, exceeding the yearly income of famed managers such as Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti.

Gerrard reflects on his tenure

Gerrard expressed his gratitude to the club, players, fans, and everyone involved during his time at Al-Ettifaq. “I have learned a lot, and it’s been a positive experience personally and for my family. But football is unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t go the way we want,” he reflected. Despite the challenges, he appreciated the opportunity and support he received throughout his tenure.

The team started the season with three straight wins but soon faced a two-month winless period. Even with two recent victories, the form wasn’t enough to improve their standings. Gerrard acknowledged the drop in form, taking the blame last week. Last season, Al-Ettifaq finished sixth under Gerrard, an improvement over their seventh place before his appointment.

Jordan Henderson’s brief stay

After Gerrard’s appointment, England and Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson joined Al-Ettifaq for around 12 million pounds ($14.92 million). However, his contract ended after six months, and he went on to sign with Ajax Amsterdam. Gerrard’s tenure, filled with lessons and challenges, ends as Al-Ettifaq seeks new directions in their football journey.
