Joe Root blasted through records in a historic Manchester day, while Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope took England to a mammoth 544/7 at Stumps. India’s day was summed up when Jasprit Bumrah ran to the dressing room for emergency meeting after just a single over spell. He tripped on his way back, hurting his ankle. India looked bereft of plans and ideas, as England inched closer to clinching the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Joe Root behind Sachin Tendulkar for most Test runs
Joe Root needed 30 more runs in Manchester to climb up to 3rd spot in the list. The 34-year-old with 13259 runs in 156 Tests, while Rahul Dravid (13288) is 4th, with Jacques Kallis one ahead with 13,289. Root was unbeaten on 11 at the end of Day 2 and made the milestone a formality in the early stages of Day 3. He continued his blistering with another ton, adding to his stellar record in Manchester. The 34-year-old leapfrogged Ricky Ponting in the process. The former Australian captain scored 13378 in 168 Tests. His 38th Test ton saw him jump to 2nd, only behind Sachin Tendulkar.
Bumrah joins Ishant Sharma, Wasim Akram
Jasprit Bumrah had a tough day at the office but he still managed to sneak a milestone. The Indian quick became just the third Asian fast bowler to pick 50 or more wickets in England in Test cricket. Ishant Sharma has 51 to his name, while Bumrah got his 50th when he dismissed Jamie Smith late on Day 3. Wasim Akram leads the pack with the Pakistan pacer scalping 53 wickets during his career.
