by · Inside Sport India

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 in India & Sri Lanka will be a 20-team tournament.

While the hype for the England vs India Test series might be at an all-time high currently, the entire globe will be set to screens in eight months. The reason? Well, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will begin, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

As preparations continue for the mega event, 15 out of the 20 participating teams have now officially sealed their spots. The latest entrants are the Netherlands and Italy, who created history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup, let alone a Men’s T20 World Cup! While the Dutch have been multi-time participants, Italy surpassed Scotland’s challenge to create history, under the leadership of Joe Burns.

Recently, Canada also secured qualification from the Americas Regional Final after a commanding campaign on home soil.

Canada to play in World Cup in India

Canada capped off a dominant run in the Americas Qualifier with a resounding win over the Bahamas. Bowling first, they dismissed their opponents for just 57, with Kaleem Sana and Shivam Sharma picking up three wickets each. Dilpreet Bajwa then smashed an unbeaten 36 off 14 balls to finish the chase in just 5.3 overs and confirm Canada’s ticket to the subcontinent. Led by Nicholas Kirton, Canada won all five of their games in the Americas regional final, brushing aside Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, and the Bahamas in a series of great performances.

This will be the second time Canada plays in a World Cup event in India. They were one of the 14 teams to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2011, which was jointly held in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. They won just one out of their six league games. Also in 2024, Canada qualified for their first-ever T20 World Cup in the Americas. They won a game against Ireland, but the match against India was abandoned due to rain, ruling them out of the tournament.

Italy script history

Meanwhile, the Netherlands topped the table in the T20 World Cup 2026 European Qualifier with 6 points from 4 matches, winning 3 games. They defeated Jersey by 7 wickets, Guernsey by 73 runs, and Italy by 9 wickets, with their only loss coming against Scotland.

However, Italy made history by qualifying for the T20 World Cup for the first time under the leadership of former Australian opener Joe Burns. Despite winning 2 matches and having the same 5 points as Jersey, Italy secured 2nd place due to a superior net run rate of +0.612 compared to Jersey’s +0.306. After being restricted to 134 for 7, Italy needed to hold the Netherlands for at least 14 overs in order to qualify. Italy pipped Jersey, who had beaten Scotland earlier in the day, on superior NRR.
