by · Inside Sport India

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan's batting effort put India in command on Day 1 of the 2nd Test.

India enjoyed yet another day of batting dominance to kick off the IND vs WI 2nd Test in Delhi. Having opted to bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a stunning century while Sai Sudharsan scored a gritty 87 to run the West Indies attack into the ground. The duo batted most of the day, making the best of the conditions on offer at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Shubman Gill won the toss and had his team batting first. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal got India off to a good start. Rahul however missed out on a huge score after being stumped on 38. Sudharsan joined Jaiswal and the two picked their gaps perfectly in a 193-run stand. Here, Insidesport. In, looks at all the IND vs WI Highlights from Day 1:

Yashasvi Jaiswal – greatest modern day opener?

India cricket team opener Yashasvi Jaiswal registered his seventh century in Tests in the IND vs WI 2nd Test, his third one at home on Friday. After scoring just 36 runs in the 1st Test, the southpaw stamped his authority on the visitors with a 145-ball ton, helping India extend their dominance in the game. Since his Test debut, no opener in the world has scored more hundreds than Jaiswal. No one has even scored 5 hundreds, while the Indian opener stands atop with 7. His centuries have come in 48 innings, 2 fewer than Graeme Smith. It might still be early, but Jaiswal is making a claim to be the best modern day opener in Tests.

Sai Sudharsan repays Gambhir-Gill faith

Much of the talk ahead of the Delhi Test was of Sai Sudharsan’s place in the side. He averaged just 21 heading into the IND vs WI 2nd Test, with competition for places severe in Indian cricket. However, Shubman Gill continued to give his Gujarat Titans teammate his equivocal backing. The left-hander responded in style, with a fine half-century. He stitched a 193-run stand with Jaiswal. Sudharsan was eventually dismissed for 87 and would regret missing out on a century.

Disciplined West Indies pose no dangers

After their hammering in Ahmedabad, Roston Chase rung in the changes, bringing in Anderson Phillip to shore up his attack. However, the West Indies had no response to India’s two left-handers in Delhi. To their credit, the visitors we disciplined, conceding 0 extras in more than 70 overs. However, barring Jomel Warrican’s two strikes, it was smooth sailing for the Indian batters at the Kotla.

India unchanged, Bumrah plays, Padikkal doesn’t

Shubman Gill confirmed at the toss that India would play an unchanged XI for the second Test. That would see Jasprit Bumrah continue to feature, despite the wicket assisting spin. Bumrah’s workload is a major talking point in Indian cricket circles. The fast bowler featured in the Asia Cup and now has played back to back Tests at home. He however misses out on ODIs against Australia, before returning for the T20I series.

An unchanged XI meant that Devdutt Padikkal will have to wait to add to his 2 Test caps. The left-hander was added the to squad as a middle order option but India have opted to play 3 all-rounders and Dhruv Jurel.
