Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has identified the five teams he believes are genuine contenders for the 2025/26 season English Premier League crown.

Arsenal, aiming for their first league triumph since 2004, currently sit five points clear at the top, having suffered only one defeat in their opening 13 matches.

Arsenal could have stretched their lead even further but were held to a draw by ten-man Chelsea, with Mikel Merino cancelling out Trevoh Chalobah’s early strike at Stamford Bridge, per Al Jazeera.

Chelsea, who entered the derby in second place, dropped to third after Manchester City snatched a last-gasp winner in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Leeds United.

Aston Villa sit level on points with third-placed Chelsea, while Brighton and newly promoted Sunderland occupy European spots ahead of Manchester United and defending champions Liverpool.

Liverpool’s title defence has faltered badly, with nearly half of their league games ending in defeat and a nine-point gap opening up behind early leaders Arsenal.

Below are the standings after matchday 13:

Enzo Fernandez names 5 EPL contenders

Even so, Fernandez still considers Liverpool among the Premier League’s ‘contenders’, alongside Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United.

‘Of course we are [title contenders],’ the £115m Chelsea star told GiveMeSport.
‘This season, there are many contenders: Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United. All the teams are battling towards the top. There are some very strong Premier League sides.
‘Arsenal have also been doing really well for many years. And Liverpool are a great side. I’m not going to choose one because they’re all good.’

Fernandez is hopeful that Chelsea will not only challenge for the Premier League but also enjoy a productive run in the Champions League.

The Argentina international added:

‘We know the Champions League is very tough. We’ll try to reach the final, which is what we deserve as a club. We’ve been doing well, so we’re capable of being right up there.’

While the title ambitions of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City seem relatively straightforward, making a convincing case for Liverpool and Manchester United is far more difficult.

Liverpool, tipped to defend their crown after an eye-catching summer overhaul, have endured a turbulent campaign under Arne Slot, losing nine of their previous 12 matches, their worst spell since 1953, before finally securing a morale-boosting win over West Ham on Sunday.

Manchester United also picked up three points that day with a comeback victory over Crystal Palace, yet they have still dropped points in more than half of their league fixtures, and although Ruben Amorim’s side look improved, that progress comes after a season in which they finished as low as 15th.
