What killed Diogo Jota
Dad-of-three Jota, 28, and Silva, 25, tragically lost their lives when the Lamborghini they were travelling in burst into flames, reportedly due to a suspected tyre blowout.
Spanish authorities confirmed that Jota was behind the wheel of the acid green rental Lamborghini when the crash occurred near Zamora on July 3.
The brothers were on their way to the port city of Santander to board a ferry to the UK, as Jota had been advised against flying following recent lung surgery.
They were laid to rest last Saturday in an emotional funeral service, attended by grieving family members, close friends, and Jota’s Liverpool teammates.
Liverpool to retire Jota's shirt number
Liverpool will permanently retire Diogo Jota’s number 20 shirt, marking the first time in the club’s history that a shirt number will be withdrawn from use.
The Premier League champions made the heartfelt decision as a lasting tribute to the Portuguese forward, whose legacy will now live on through this symbolic gesture.
The retirement of the number will apply across all levels of the club, including the men’s senior team, women’s squad, U21s, and academy sides. The move was made in full consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family, who supported the idea.
Club officials believe the emotional tribute reflects not only Jota’s contributions on the pitch but also the deep impact he had on teammates, staff, and fans during his time at Anfield.
