IRELAND’S SHANE LOWRY remains in contention at the RBC Canadian Open, while Rory McIlroy has missed the cut after a nightmare second-round 78.

Lowry is four shots off the lead in Toronto, having carded a two-under 68 on day two to sit eight-under overall. USA’s Cameron Champ tops the leaderboard on 12-under following a second-round 66.

Champ’s compatriot Andrew Putnam went lowest today with a 62, to sit two shots behind in second. Overnight co-leader Thorbjorn Olesen fired five birdies to balance three bogeys and a double bogey in an even par 70 to share third place on nine-under with Canadians Nick Taylor and Richard Lee and Victor Perez of France.

Lowry started on the back nine today, bogeying the 10th before shooting birdies on holes 13 — sinking a 32-foot putt — 15 and five amidst a steady round. He opened with a six-under 64 on Thursday.

World number two McIlroy posted an eight-over 78 to miss the cut by a wide margin in his final start before next week’s US Open at Oakmont.

McIlroy’s nightmare round included a quadruple bogey eight at the fifth hole, where he fired his second shot out of bounds and after a one-stroke penalty hit another shot over the green.

He made a double-bogey at the 11th, where he was in the water hazard off the tee, and missed the cut for the first time this season.

Seamus Power withdrew during his first round on Friday.
