Silver medal for Aoife O'Rourke after defeat in World Boxing Championship final

AOIFE O’ROURKE has been defeated in the final of the 75kg category at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Niš, Serbia.

Entering the ring shortly after her sister Lisa’s defeat, the two-time Olympian also fell short in her quest for a gold medal after a narrow defeat to Anastasiia Shamonova of Russia.

Shamonova took the first round on a 4-1 split although Aoife did land some important shots midway through the opener to win on one of the scorecards.

Aoife started the second round strongly but Shamonova responded again with some significant blows to ensure she repeated the trick with the 4-1 split on the scorecards. Two judges awarded the round to Shamonova 20-18 two other judges ruled it as 19-19.

Similar to her sister Lisa, Aoife was unable to make up the deficit in the final round as Shamonova continued to connect and keep her nose in front.

Her arm was raised after a unanimous decision as O’Rourke finishes the championships with a silver medal to match her sibling’s finish in the 70 kg division.
