Rivers United FC has made a bold statement in Port Harcourt’s dugout, officially naming Yemi Olanrewaju, affectionately known as Yema, as the club’s new Chief Coach.

He succeeds Evans Ogenyi, whose contract has now reached its term.

“Coach Yemi Daniel Olanrewaju joins our technical crew led by Technical Manager Finidi George,” the club confirmed in their announcement, on social media (X)

Yema joins a coaching setup guided by Finidi George, a Nigerian legend and the side’s Technical Manager, marking a transfer of tactical leadership and ambition to the Pride of Rivers.

From apprentice to chief

Yema’s trajectory reads like a journeyman’s roadmap to stardom. He cut his teeth at third-division Magate FC in 2019 before progressing to assistant roles at MFM FC and the Nigeria U‑17 team.

In September 2022, he joined Enyimba FC as Finidi George’s right hand and helped steer the People’s Elephant to their record-extending ninth NPFL title in the 2022–23 season

In May 2024, when Finidi ascended to the Super Eagles’ helm, Yema stepped up as interim head coach at Enyimba.

His impressive stewardship won him the permanent top role in August, even as he pursued his UEFA C licence, with plans underway for a UEFA B certification gotten now.

Tactical innovation en route Rivers United

Now, Yema brings his progressive approach to Rivers United, stepping into a club determined to keep its place amongst NPFL’s elite, and in pursuit for the trophy next.

Under Finidi’s technical direction, Yema is set to spearhead a squad hungry for silverware and strategic growth.

His track record suggests a coach who bets on youth development, structured play from the back, and a fearless mindset; qualities Rivers United believe align perfectly with their vision.

With both pedigree and promise, Yemi “Yema” Olanrewaju stands ready to lead Rivers United into a new era.
