Laughs might be in short supply for Ruben Amorim, however, the embattled Manchester United boss probably allowed himself a wry smile knowing Rangers are once again on his horizon.

Because a season-defining Europa League showdown against the men in Light Blue while being engulfed in a storm amid claims over his competency is nothing new to the 39-year-old, of course, it's just the way things are when he takes on the Ibrox side. This is a man who was decried by his own coaching association for lacking the qualifications during his red-hot stint as Braga boss. is locking horns with Rangers again.

Portuguese Managers and Coaches Association's Jose Pereira, speaking in 2020 didn't hold back, stating: "I am not questioning his ability and competence, I am questioning the fact Braga are not complying with the regulations agreed with every club. I might be able to fly a plane, but without the correct qualifications, I wouldn't be allowed. It's the same with coaching."

But any bureaucratic issues were not replicated on the pitch. Amorim's two defeat to Steven Gerrard's side were his only setbacks before Sporting came calling to stump up £8.4m for a boss who would revolutionise the sleeping Lisbon giants. But now Amorim will step out against Rangers again with pundits, punters and neutral observers raising serious doubts over the direction of travel United are headed in. He's not a rookie now, of course, but he is battling against a bristling notion he and his three at the back system is an ill-fit for Old Trafford.

Amorim's claim the current Red Devils team could be the worst was lampooned by Jamie Carragher with the leading pundit warning him that shout was "bizarre and ridiculous". And here come a Rangers side heading to Old Trafford who boast a record in the Europa League which belies their wonky domestic form. Philippe Clement and Co will be rightly confident against a side who appear like they want to be anywhere rather than playing in front of their own public.

From charismatic orator with a vision for a great Manchester United rebuild to an ashen-faced boss firing out truth bombs that makes his own people squirm. He might be downbeat on his own charges, however, he was effusive in his praise of the Ibrox side the last time he faced them. He said: "I do know they are a top club. They are a club that are used to European competition, like us."
