Ashley Young summed up his feelings in one word after the Everton star was denied the chance to play against his teenage son.

The veteran defender, 39, replaced Nathan Patterson for the final 15 minutes of last night's 2-0 FA Cup win over Peterborough United. And that step up the opportunity for the ex-Man United and England hero to face his son Tyler, who was on the bench for the Posh. The Youngs were hoping to make history by becoming the first father and son to have faced each other in the in 154-year-old competition.

But killjoy boss Darren Ferguson sparked a spectacular social media backlash from fans and neutrals alike by opting against using the 18-year-old midfielder as one of his five changes. And now, Young Sr has broken silence on X by simply writing: "GUTTED……"

The post has already been viewed more than two million times, with one follower replying: "Out of order mate , no harm throwing him on for last 10." Another wrote: "Ferguson just made it about himself, put him on for the last minute what harm does it do." But a third defended Ferguson by adding: "It was a tactical game of football and up to the manager who he brings on."

Ferguson - the son of legendary manager Sir Alex - defended his decision to leave Tyler as an unused sub and blasted the reaction of an unnamed Everton player who called him out after the game.

In his post-match press conference, he said: "It was very difficult to leave Tyler on the bench but I've got to do what I think is best for the team. As much as I wanted Tyler to get on, if the game had been 2-0 at that point I would've put him on, but at 1-0, I had to get a forward on. I've got to try and get something out of the game and do what is best for my team. One of their players had a pop at me which was bang out of order. We are not a charity case."
