NEW YORK, Sept 8 : Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain was stunned 6-7(5) 6-1 6-3 1-6 7-6(10-7) by Ben Shelton in the U.S. Open quarterfinals on Tuesday, as his bid for back-to-back titles at the Grand Slam came to an end.

Alcaraz won a tight first set and later levelled the clash at two sets apiece despite struggling with unforced errors, but he was unable to get over the finish line as American Shelton raised his level when it mattered to prevail.
