Ace India pacer Jasprit Burmah has reportedly opted out of the captaincy race for Team India ahead of the India vs England five-match Test series, set to begin from June 20. Rohit Sharma announced shock retirement from Test cricket earlier this week. The veteran Indian opening batter last featured in the whites as captain for India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series in Australia, where Bumrah was the vice-captain.

Bumrah, who has been part of the Indian men’s Test team’s leadership group since 2022 and has led India in three matches, was seen as the frontrunner to succeed Rohit. However, according to a report from Sky Sports, the pacer has chosen to withdraw from the race for captaincy.

As per the report, Bumrah has ruled himself out of the Test captaincy race as he is unable to commit to playing all five matches during the upcoming England tour due to workload management. The pacer had previously missed the Champions Trophy earlier this year after suffering a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Notably, Bumrah led the Indian side to a famous victory in the first match of the India vs Australia series where India defeated Australia by a massive 295-run margin to go 1-0 up in the series.

With Bumrah uncertain to play all five Tests, the selectors could lean towards appointing someone who can consistently feature throughout the series. This has boosted the chances of Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, who are now the front-runners for the role. The selectors are expected to finalise the decision soon, with the one who misses out on captaincy likely to be named the team’s next vice-captain.
