The Royal Challengers Bengaluru has announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of each of the eleven victims who lost their lives in the stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, June 4. The team will also be creating a fund called 'RCB cares' to support the fans who sustained injuries in the incident.
What was meant to be a celebratory event for RCB's maiden victory in the IPL 2025 turned into a tragedy after lakhs of fans turned up at the stadium, which had a capacity of just 35,000. The overcrowding, coupled with mismanagement turned things chaotic, eventually leading to a stampede that killed eleven and injured 33 others.
"The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family. As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of INR 10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased," RCB's statement read.
"Our fans will always remain at the heart of everything that we do. We remain united in grief," it added.
Hours after the stampede, Virat Kohli said in a post on Instagram, expressing grief over the tragic incident. He shared RCB's statement on the Bengaluru stampede and wrote that he was "absolutely gutted" and "at a loss for words".
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed grief over the incident, calling it an "unexpected tragedy". He has also announced Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the kin of all those deceased, and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
RCB ended an 18-year wait after winning their maiden IPL title with a six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the final at Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The team finally got the chance to lift the trophy after finishing runners-up on three occasions previously.
