Video: Carlos Prates hits Welterweight limit after making 29-pound weight cut | UFC Kansas City

UFC Kansas City’s headliner already hit the 170-pound mark the night before weigh-ins for his late-notice fight against Ian Machado Garry.

Ryan Harkness breaks down daily mixed martial arts (MMA) news, providing unique context to stories that only 15 years of obsessing over the sport can provide, having worked for FOX Sports, Yahoo! Sports, UPROXX, MSN, Bleacher Report, HDNet and CagePotato, among others, before joining MMAmania.com in 2017.

It’s official.

Carlos “Nightmare” Prates made weight for his UFC Kansas City scrap against Ian Machado Garry tomorrow night (Sat., April 26, 2025) inside T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

It wasn’t easy, though.

The Fighting Nerds” star shared video on his Instagram Stories of the whole painful weight-cutting process, including the moment he stepped on the scale to hit the 170-pound limit.

“We are at family weight,” Prates wrote on Instagram. “29 pounds less thanks to my nutritionist.”

“How to lose 6.5 pounds in one hour,” he captioned another video.

There were a lot of smiles and laughs amongst his team — fellow Fighting Nerd standout, Caio Borralho, was there literally holding his head through some of it. But, other videos showed a wobbly Prates getting dragged to his feet and struggling greatly with the cut.

You can’t argue with the results, though: he hit weight at the hotel before midnight so he likely had a restful night and morning ahead of UFC Fight Night Kansas City’s official weigh-in event earlier this morning.

Prates has gained a reputation for being the least disciplined of the Fighting Nerds. He smokes, he parties and training footage seems to show him unimpressed with the process of preparing for a five-round fight.

And that could be the chink in his armor that Machado Garry will aim to exploit.

“The Future” went five hard rounds against Shavkat Rakhmonov and still seemed to have gas in the tank to keep going. With just 25 days to prepare, will his cardio (and weight) be as on point? There’s lots of questions coming into this Welterweight scrap that will only be answered on fight night.

For now, smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.
