New Delhi, Mar 9: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced a cash reward of Rs 131 crore for the Indian cricket team after it created history by winning a record third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title in Ahmedabad.

India defeated New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday to become the first team in the tournament’s history to retain the T20 World Cup trophy. With the victory, India also became the first side to win the competition three times, strengthening its status among the most successful teams in the format.

“The Board congratulates the players, support staff and selectors once again on this historic achievement and wishes them continued success in the future,” the BCCI said in a statement.

The prize money announced for the 2026 triumph is Rs 6 crore higher than the amount awarded to the team after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. In that edition, India had lifted the trophy unbeaten, ending an 11-year wait for an ICC title.

India entered the 2026 tournament as one of the favourites and won all four of their Group A matches, although there were concerns about the team not delivering a complete performance.

Their campaign suffered a setback when South Africa handed them a heavy 76-run defeat. The result, combined with West Indies’ big win over Zimbabwe in Group 1, left India needing victories in their next two matches to stay in contention for the final.

The team bounced back strongly with impressive wins over Zimbabwe and West Indies to keep their hopes alive. In the semi-final, India defeated England in a high-scoring contest to secure a place in the final against New Zealand.

In the title clash, India delivered a dominant performance and defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to clinch the historic trophy. (Agencies)
