Iran captain Mehdi Taremi insists his team is focused solely on football at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, refusing to be drawn into the geopolitical tensions that have dominated the build‑up to their campaign.

Speaking ahead of Iran’s opening Group G match against New Zealand on Tuesday, June 16, Taremi made clear that his side’s mission is to bring joy to the Iranian people, not to engage in political statements.

"We respect all Iranians, be it those inside the country or outside. We are here to play football, and football can always unite all factions," Taremi told reporters.

"Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and we respect them, but we are here to bring joy to the Iranian people. We do not get involved in politics. We are here to play football."

Iran’s participation in the tournament has been overshadowed by the ongoing war between Iran and the United States, which forced the team to relocate its camp base to Mexico. All of Iran’s matches are scheduled to be played on US soil, but a recent peace agreement has been signed to prevent further escalation of hostilities.

Taremi, who plays for Inter Milan, will lead his country in what is their fourth consecutive World Cup appearance. Iran have never advanced beyond the group stage, and Taremi’s leadership will be crucial if they are to break that cycle.

Iran face New Zealand, Egypt, and Belgium in Group G. Their campaign kicks off in the early hours of Tuesday, with the team determined to let their football do the talking.
