I gave him a mental and physical break – Hearts of Oak coach justifies omission of goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi

Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has clarified the omission of in-form goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi from the matchday squad for the team's recent victory, explaining it was a deliberate welfare decision aimed at providing a full mental and physical break for the player.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Dramani sought to quell speculation following Agbasi's absence from the bench in the 2-1 win over Hohoe United. Agbasi had started the club's three previous matches, keeping a clean sheet in the most recent fixture against Berekum Chelsea.

“Solomon Agbasi wasn’t on the bench against Hohoe United because I gave him a mental and physical break. The mental break meant not being on the bench at all, so he could properly rest,” Dramani stated, emphasising his management philosophy of prioritising player recovery and long-term performance over short-term appearances.

The decision fuelled debate among fans regarding the club's goalkeeping hierarchy, which has been a topic of discussion this season. While Agbasi has delivered a string of impressive recent performances, veteran Benjamin Asare has been widely regarded as the established first-choice goalkeeper.

Dramani's move highlights a strategic approach to squad management, particularly as the fixture list becomes more demanding. By rotating his goalkeepers and ensuring key players receive adequate rest, he aims to maintain a high level of performance throughout the season. The coach's comments suggest that both Agbasi and Asare remain integral parts of his plans, with selections based on tactical needs and physical readiness.

Hearts of Oak will be hoping this clear communication and careful player management continue to yield positive results as they push for a strong finish in the Ghana Premier League.
