Mohammed Fuseini misses out as Union Saint-Gilloise stun PSV in Champions League debut
· GhanaSoccernetGhanaian forward Mohammed Fuseini was absent through injury as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise marked their UEFA Champions League debut with a stunning 3-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven at the Philips Stadion on Tuesday night.
Fuseini, who played a key role in Union’s title triumph last season, missed the trip with an ankle injury. His absence was a blow, but it did little to derail the Belgian champions, who produced a historic performance in their maiden appearance in Europe’s elite competition.
Promise David opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Christian Burgess was fouled in the box. Anouar Ait El Hadj doubled the advantage before halftime with a superb solo strike, sending the travelling supporters into raptures. PSV had their chances, with Ruben van Bommel striking the crossbar, but they struggled to find a breakthrough.
Union sealed the points late in the second half when Kevin Mac Allister converted from a set-piece to make it 3-0, before Van Bommel netted a consolation for the Dutch champions.
The result capped a memorable night for Union, who secured their first-ever Champions League win, while PSV will aim to bounce back when they face Bayer Leverkusen on matchday 2.
