'No big surprise' – Ampem Darkoa Coach William Afoakwa says title win was expected
· GhanaSoccernetAmpem Darkoa Ladies head coach William Afoakwa has played down the drama of his side's 2-1 comeback victory over Hasaacas Ladies in the Women's Premier League final, insisting the result was no surprise to him.
Speaking after the final whistle, Afoakwa revealed that his preparations were always geared towards continental success, not just the domestic title.
"No big deal. No big surprise or whatever," he said.
"For me, I'm not surprised because my preparations were towards WAFU and not even the league. When the league started, I watched the way Ampem Darkoa played their game. I compared it to other teams and said to myself, 'We are going to win the league."
The coach's confidence stemmed from the quality and strategy of his players, as well as a previous defeat to Hasaacas in the FA Cup quarter-finals, which he believed was due to home advantage.
"I told them we were going to beat them in the finals because it's on neutral ground. Today we saw them, and I said, 'I won't allow them to beat us twice.'"
Afoakwa made it clear that his true ambition lies beyond Ghana.
"It's all about going to Africa. That's our ambition."
With the league title secured, Ampem Darkoa now turn their attention to the WAFU Zone B qualifiers for the CAF Women's Champions League, where they hope to conquer the continent.
