'We all watched Senegal fight bravely in AFCON 2025 final' – Didier Drogba
· GhanaSoccernetIvorian football icon Didier Drogba has joined the chorus of voices condemning the Confederation of African Football's decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, reminding the continent that millions witnessed the Teranga Lions' triumph on the pitch.
In a passionate statement, Drogba invoked the collective memory of fans who watched the final unfold in real-time.
"We all watched Senegal fight bravely and defeat Morocco in a historic final. But now, months later, a decision made in a boardroom has changed that story. The CAF Appeals Committee has overturned the result… and suddenly, a victory won on the pitch has been stolen," he said.
The January 18 final in Rabat saw Senegal overcome chaos, controversy, and a late penalty scare to defeat Morocco 1-0 after extra time. Senegal players had walked off for 17 minutes to protest the stoppage-time penalty award but returned, saw Brahim Diaz miss the spot kick, and scored the winner through Pape Gueye.
On March 17, CAF's Appeal Board ruled that the walkout breached tournament regulations, deeming Senegal had forfeited the match and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory – and the trophy.
Drogba warned that the decision strikes at the heart of African football's credibility.
"This isn't just about one trophy. It's about the credibility, dignity, and spirit of African football."
He called for leadership that prioritises transparency and trust, adding: "We must not allow ambiguity and politics to steal the joy of victory from our people."
