'My desire to play for the Black Stars is not new,' says defender Maxwell Woledzi
· GhanaSoccernetNashville SC defender Maxwell Woledzi has opened up about his long-standing ambition to represent Ghana at the international level, stating his desire to play for the Black Stars is a deeply held dream, not a newfound goal.
Following his high-profile transfer from Norwegian club Fredrikstad FK to Major League Soccer, the 24-year-old revealed that the aspiration has been with him since the early stages of his career in Europe.
"I’ve been wanting to play for the Black Stars since I was in Nordsjaelland, so it’s not something new," Woledzi stated, referencing his time at Danish club FC Nordsjælland's academy.
The talented defender, who is yet to earn his first senior national team cap, emphasised that his current focus is on performing at the highest level for his club. He believes consistent excellence is the key to catching the selectors' attention. "I just have to make sure that in my club I give my best and do what I have to do for the people in charge to see who I am," he explained.
Woledzi, a product of the renowned Right to Dream Academy, understands the immense pride associated with national team duty. "Everyone is hoping to play for the national team, and if you play for the national team, it is a proud moment for you and your family," he added.
His declaration comes at a significant time for Ghanaian football, as the Black Stars prepare for their campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, the team will be looking to build a competitive squad.
Woledzi's impressive form, which earned him the Fredrikstad Player of the Year award before his move to Nashville, positions him as a potential future asset for the national team as he continues his development in the MLS.
