'Better feeling than my pro debut' – Daniel-Kofi Kyereh on emotional return from ACL injury
· GhanaSoccernetGhana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has expressed profound relief and gratitude following his long-awaited return to competitive football, describing the experience as a moment of 'pure joy.'
The SC Freiburg playmaker, who had been sidelined for over three years due to a grueling battle with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, recently made his comeback for the club’s reserve side.
Reflecting on the milestone, Kyereh revealed that the emotional weight of the return surpassed even his professional debut.
"Yeah, it was pure joy, pure thankfulness. I was giving thanks to God throughout the whole day. It was just a special moment for me," Kyereh told Joy Sports.
He emphasized the mental fortitude required during his rehabilitation, noting that his conviction never wavered despite the lengthy absence.
"It was an even better feeling than my first professional game because, during that long period, I always believed, and I was sure the day would come."
Kyereh’s recovery journey was particularly arduous, involving multiple surgeries and setbacks that kept him out of action since February 2023.
At one point, the midfielder even admitted to battling thoughts of retirement.
However, after successful substitute appearances—including a dramatic late winning goal against Hessen Kassel—the 30-year-old insists he is back to full strength.
"Yeah, I feel good. I’m ready. My body is good and my mind as well. So, I’m perfect," he concluded.
The 30-year-old said he is dreaming of playing at the 2026 World Cup with Ghana but only if he can help the team.
