Egypt 'ready' to bid for 2028 AFCON duties
· GhanaSoccernetEgypt has officially declared its intention to bid for the right to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations.
The country's Ministry of Youth and Sports confirmed its readiness, citing its existing world-class infrastructure as a decisive advantage.
Ministry spokesperson Mohamed El-Shazly stated that Egypt is "the most ready" candidate, arguing that the nation's stadiums, transport networks, and facilities meet standards sufficient to host a global event like the World Cup. The government has formally communicated this position to the Egyptian Football Association to begin preparing a joint bid for submission to the Confederation of African Football.
Egypt last hosted the tournament in 2019, delivering an event praised for its seamless organisation and security. Officials believe this proven track record, combined with continued infrastructure investment, makes a compelling case for a return in 2028.
The bid process will be a coordinated effort, with discussions already underway between the sports ministry and football federation officials. However, the Egyptian FA plans to proceed cautiously, with internal talks on the formal bid expected only after the conclusion of the ongoing 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
The 2028 tournament is significant as it marks the start of a new four-year cycle for the competition. Egypt aims to leverage its experience and ready-made facilities to secure the hosting rights for a record sixth time.
