A solitary strike from Brahim Diaz on Sunday evening secured a narrow 1-0 victory for Morocco over Tanzania to send the Atlas Lions into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In the Round of 16 clash played at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, Tanzania started the contest strongly right from the onset, making it clear they were in to win despite being the underdog.

As the minutes went by, Morocco took control of the match and started to create chances. In the 15th minute, Ismael Saibari found the back of Tanzania’s net with a powerful header.

However, after consulting the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the centre referee disallowed the goal due to an offside.

Despite pushing for an equaliser after that incident, Morocco failed and had to settle for a goalless draw at halftime.

After recess, the Atlas Lions resumed play with renewed energy, playing the match in the area of Tanzania in their bid to find a breakthrough.

Achraf Hakimi came close to scoring from a direct free-kick when his effort crashed against the crossbar on the hour mark.

Four minutes later, Hakimi set up Brahimi with a fine pass. The Real Madrid man beat his marker beautifully before firing his effort into the near post, as he left the Tanzania goalkeeper helpless.

The stunning equaliser proved to be the decider at full time, giving Morocco a 1-0 triumph and sending them into the quarter-finals.

Brahim Diaz’s winning goal against Tanzania has seen him make history as the only Moroccan player to score in four consecutive AFCON matches.
