Ghanaian defender Maxwell Woledzi explains reason for joining Nashville
· GhanaSoccernetGhanaian defender Maxwell Woledzi believes his move to Major League Soccer's Nashville SC was the natural and correct next step for his career.
The 24-year-old made the switch from Norwegian club Fredrikstad FK in December 2025, signing a three-year deal with the American side.
In an exclusive interview, the former Right to Dream Academy product explained that a thorough assessment of the club's environment was key to his decision.
"When I assessed everything, [moving to] Nashville was the right thing to do," Woledzi stated. "You have to know who you are going to work with – the people around you," he told Citi Sports.
He emphasised the importance of the people and structure at his new club, noting that a supportive ecosystem is crucial for success.
"When you have good people around you, i.e., the coaches, the technical directors, the players, then you know you are going to a good place. I assessed Nashville and the league… I know that I’m going to meet very good players."
Woledzi joins a growing contingent of Ghanaian players making their mark in MLS, following in the footsteps of stars like LA Galaxy's Joseph Paintsil and Osman Bukari, among others. His transfer comes on the back of an outstanding individual season in Norway, where his performances earned him the Fredrikstad FK Player of the Year award.
Nashville SC, who were eliminated from the 2025 MLS playoffs by the eventual champion Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, will be hoping Woledzi's defensive solidity and winning mentality can help propel them further in the upcoming season. For Woledzi, the move represents a new challenge in a rising league, perfectly aligned with his career ambitions.
