GFA set for crunch meeting to appoint new Black Stars coach after Otto Addo exit

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will convene on Friday to decide on a replacement for Otto Addo, following the dismissal of the German-born coach after a run of poor results ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Sources at GhanaSoccernet.com indicate that the high-level meeting will centre on appointing a new head coach to lead Ghana at the tournament, where they are set to face Panama, Croatia and England in the group stage.
Addo had guided the team to qualification and was expected to remain in charge, but four consecutive defeats in international friendlies forced the GFA, in consultation with the Sports and Recreation Ministry, to make a change.
GFA President Kurt Okraku has already stated that a new coach will be appointed within two weeks, and Friday’s meeting is expected to move that process forward.
Several high-profile names have emerged in the media. Current Saudi Arabia coach Herve Renard remains a long-time admirer of the GFA. Former Morocco coach Walid Regragui is also reported to be interested, while Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning manager Joachim Low is understood to be a leading contender.

Former Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah has also been strongly linked with a return, with the association weighing several options before taking a final decision. There is a clear preference for an experienced and high-profile figure capable of delivering at the World Cup while rebuilding the squad for the long term.
Ghana’s recent form has raised concern, with failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and successive group-stage exits in previous editions. Despite securing a place at the World Cup, performances have not met expectations, and the team currently sits 74th in the FIFA rankings, among the lowest-ranked sides heading into the tournament.
The Black Stars will open their campaign on June 17 against Panama in Toronto, before facing England in Boston on June 23, and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27.
