Austria expose Ghana’s frailties in 5-1 friendly thrashing

Ghana endured a difficult evening in Vienna, falling 5-1 to a clinical Austria side in an international friendly at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion on Friday. 

The Black Stars, using the window to fine-tune their squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup, were second best for long periods but managed a late consolation.

Austria opened the scoring when Marcel Sabitzer converted a penalty midway through the first half after a defensive lapse. Ghana struggled to recover after the break as Michael Gregoritsch and Stefan Posch struck in quick succession to extend the lead to 3-0, reflecting Austria’s control of the game.

Captain Jordan Ayew offered brief hope with a composed finish in the 77th minute to reduce the deficit. However, late goals from Carney Chukwuemeka and Nicolas Seiwald sealed an emphatic result and highlighted the gap between the sides on the night.

The defeat raises concerns for coach Otto Addo as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup, where Ghana will face Panama, Croatia and England in the group stage.

Attention now turns to the next friendly against Germany, where Ghana will be expected to respond with a stronger performance as they look to build momentum ahead of the tournament.
